You may remember that near the end of 2010,
Japanese publisher Sankando launched Metin2 JP. Metin2 Japan had previously existed, published by rival Japanese publisher Netmarble, but was shut down due to falling player counts. Sankando came in and started what seemed to be a promising replacement, with active updates.
Recently these updates had slowed down, though this is somewhat expected as the server had almost fully "caught up" in terms of content. However, last week we noticed that their website (
www.metin2.jp) had gone offline. The Metin2 JP twitter account has also gone silent.
Sankando has been plagued with issues recently. Another game that Sankando published named
M2-online (not to be confused with Metin2) suffered data problems, and the company had kept no usable backup. This left them
no other choice but to cease operating M2-online.
After the closure of M2-online, Sankando is at least
offering compensation (
translation). If Metin2 JP has also suffered the same fate, hopefully this means that disgruntled Metin2 JP players (many of which were previously dumped without compensation by Netmarble) could expect compensation this time around.
