Metin2DB Preview / Overview
« on: December 16, 2010, 04:55:30 PM »
This is something that has been planned in some form or other for a very long time, over a year in fact ;D.

The basic goal is this: Metin2 DB will be a complete, accessible, easy to use database of info about Metin2. Everything from skills, characters, items, quests and the like. If you have used a site like WoWDB, this is the right idea. The user should be able to easily find what they're looking for rather intuitively. Linking should be paramount, i.e. if an item is mentioned, it should be a link to an entry on that item. Everything, indexes of items, the entry for a single item etc, should have a permanent URL that will always work to display information on that item. This URL will also identify the locality of the item, i.e. if you will be able to link a UK player to the UK version of their epic weapons, showing the correct stats. In the future, it may also be multi lingual, so that a Metin2 PTMetin2 PT player for example can browse the DB with an interface in their own laguage, with all of the correct item names for Metin2 PT.

Everything should be covered, starting with items and monsters, and eventually covering all quests and other info later on. Interactivity is also important. Since we have all the data, why not make it easy for users to make comparisons between different items?

For now, here are a few teaser images:

This is still very much a work in progress, but progress is being made. Expect to hear more soon :)

Don't worry about it.  :)  It's just a diagram of the database's schema which, until now, has kept changing.

AWESOME! I've always wanted something like this, ever since I played a game with an excellent wiki. Metin2 DEMetin2 DE has a wiki and Metin2 UKMetin2 UK has one too, but both are incomplete (specially the UK's) and somewhat disorganized.

If you need any help I can give, please tell me and I'll do my best :P

Wikis are the slow, painful route for a game like Metin. Work started on this again after seeing the useless effort being wasted on that metin2 US wikia wiki. With a wiki you have to edit and enter everything manually. And then if you want to work with the data that is stored in your wiki, you are stuck, since it's essentially just text stored in pages. It can be done, of course, I'm not denying that, but it's far from an efficient or most useful method.

This Metin2DB is instead all about arranging the data itself, and then just creating an interface to browse and work with it usefully :)

When language support is finished I might come to you if you're ok with doing a PT translation (the interface, not Metin2 names :P). It will also have a proper permissions system (you might notice the new database team user group at the bottom of the board index), so users can be given the ability to update/add to the db and so on :)

Right now the system is still quite sketchy, but soon we'll have more screenshots to show you.  :3

We'll start by adding data for a couple of initial servers, then we'll move on to the others.

Interesting idea, and very useful. If there was a way to download the data, it'd be easy to make a program to check different builds, equipments and such.

And yes, I don't have any problems doing the/some of the PT interface (PT/PT, not PT/BR).

It's like you're reading my mind :P. When I mentioned the comparison etc, that is something that hopefully we can do in the future. For example, if you are logged in, you could be able to setup "loadouts", where you choose items to place on a char. You could then get a report saying the stats you might have (e.g. This loadout has 80% vs warrior, 30% vs assassin), or do comparisons between different setups to see which is best =o Maybe some graphs or charts to help compare between setups, or compare one char vs another to see, at least statistically, which one should win in a duel.

As for the data being downloadable, if you mean the database containing the values etc, I don't think so. When it's completed, it'll be a valuable asset. I might expand the API (look at 17 July 2010 update) so that other sites or programs could grab data in XML, but it would be locked down. I'd give you a key or something and only valid requests would be returned.

Italian translation here if you need.
And also if you need to make some programs handling data.

Just felt like saying, this is still in the works. It is hard to estimate a release date right now, but it will likely be out before this year ends. :P

To those of you offering your support, thank you very much. :) We'll take you into account for when the time comes, for sure.

Great work. I am *trying* to make something similar, although it's US-related, some sort of wiki (actually, it is a wiki, but oh well.. far from being completed). I also used some of your mob pictures for it.
But I must say, this project is quite different, and more important in a way, as it allows the user to find what they want, from the comparison of the items to the database's size. Great work, again.
Anyway, if I can help, I will, just drop me a PM ^_^
I can also help with Arabic/French translations (not the items' names)

I can provide a server running the official metin2us z8games database with all the items in it if you can make some kind of sql query script then you can dump everything real easily to your metin2db thing..

also what it takes to upgrade each item and the % success rate.. in another table..

but the items needed for upgrade are listed as a vnum so for example 27992 is white pearl and 27993 is blue pearl... IDK how you would get it all working but I think the database would help alot ;o

Did you know?Did you know: When you have the required amount of Lin/Biologist quest items for most of his quests, you cannot drop any more, but you can drop or store your current items to receive more from monsters?
